Even colder air works in for the holiday. Mostly sunny skies on Thursday but high temperatures will only be around freezing. The gusty winds will send those wind chill values even colder. And temperatures warm up into the 40 degree range for Sunday meaning any precipitation will likely change over to rain for the end of the weekend.

Teen driver who just got license arrested after fleeing traffic stop, crashing into garage

GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) — A high-speed police chase ended early Monday morning when a 17-year-old driver crashed into a garage in Indianapolis after fleeing from a traffic stop in Greenwood.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office shared details about the arrest Monday.

The incident started around 2:42 a.m. Monday when a county deputy tried to stop a vehicle for speeding near State Road 135 and County Line Road.

The driver, the unidentified 17-year-old male, accelerated and fled from the deputy north into Marion County. The sheriff’s office added the teenager “committed multiple additional traffic violations” as they raced from officers, including turning their car’s headlights off.

The pursuit finally end in the 6800 block of South Meridian Street in Indy, where the teen crashed into a garage. The deputy took the driver – who just got their license on Thursday – into custody without incident.

A later search of the vehicle located a semi-automatic pistol with a loaded magazine. Deputies say they also had a difficult time locating and speaking with the teen’s guardian following his arrest.

The teen was taken to a hospital for evaluation, and after being cleared, he will be taken to the Johnson County Juvenile Detention Center.

Johnson County Sheriff Duane Burgess said in a release says the arrest “highlights the continued importance of proactive policing and community awareness.”

“It is always troubling when a teenager is out at that hour, flees from law enforcement, and is then found to be in possession of the type of weapon seized by our deputies,” he said. “We are sharing this information to keep our community informed and to underscore our ongoing commitment to public safety in Johnson County.”

The teen faces preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle and dangerous possession of a firearm. It was unclear if the teen would be charged as an adult.

Indianapolis councilor faces threats amid string of swatting calls

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indianapolis City-County Councilor Nick Roberts, a Democrat, said he’s received bombing and swatting threats similar to what several state lawmakers have faced in recent days.

As News 8 previously reported, at least seven Indiana state senators have been threatened or had officers show up to their homes in targeted swatting incidents, where someone makes a false emergency report to evoke a large response from law enforcement.

Swatting gets its name from previous successful attempts to get Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams to breach homes during hoax calls, which have proven to be deadly in some cases.

“While it is unclear exactly why I was targeted, these came shortly after I made posts on social media condemning the threats against some of the Indiana State Senators,” Roberts said in a statement.

Roberts told News 8 both the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and Indiana State Police are investigating the threats, which occurred on Nov. 20. He declined to share examples to protect the integrity of the investigation.

The recent string of threats against lawmakers has included at least seven state senators in the fallout of the Indiana Senate’s decision to delay redistricting talks until January. No injuries have been reported.

Gov. Mike Braun, who’s been a vocal advocate for redistricting, said law enforcement is working “around the clock” to identify the people targeting officials.

“These threats to lawmakers, including those received by me and my family in recent days, need to stop,” Braun posted on social media. “If you threaten or attempt to carry out acts of violence against Indiana’s elected officials, we WILL bring you to justice.”

Hoax calls that lead to SWAT callouts could potentially lead to up to two and a half years in prison under a new Indiana law that took effect this year.

FULL STATEMENT FROM NICK ROBERTS

Yesterday, I received multiple threats about bombings and a swatting attempt. While it is unclear exactly why I was targeted, these came shortly after I made posts on social media condemning the threats against some of the Indiana State Senators. Most importantly, thankfully, my family and I are safe and no incident occurred.

I greatly appreciate the Indiana State Police and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department for their alertness during this scary situation and taking these threats very seriously. Though I cannot provide more details at this time due to ongoing investigations, I want to condemn these criminal acts and again call publicly for an end to political violent rhetoric from the top down.

Debate and disagreement are the foundation of a healthy democracy. In our politics, we must be able to disagree without resorting to violence and threats.

Indiana State Police fired shots during Lafayette police shooting

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WISH) – At least one Indiana State Police (ISP) trooper also fired their weapon in a deadly Friday morning shooting involving the Lafayette Police Department (LPD).

As News 8 previously reported, officers shot and killed 50-year old Rodolfo Requenes, Jr, of Lafayette, during an incident at the Waterford Court Apartments in Lafayette, Indiana.

In an email to News 8, ISP Sgt. Jeremy Piers confirmed state police assisting LPD during the incident fired their weapon, but it’s not clear if it was one trooper or multiple who fired shots. Lafayette Police had previously said the LPD officers involved are on administrative leave, per protocol in police shootings, but it wasn’t known at the time whether ISP had also fired.

According to the Lafayette Police Department, on Nov. 21, around 12:25 a.m., Requenes drove off from a traffic stop after an LPD officer pulled him over on suspicion of impaired driving. Requenes was spotted about 50 minutes later driving into the Waterford Court Apartments.

LPD officers confronted Requenes with assistance from ISP.

Police claim Requenes wasn’t following commands and stated he was armed, then “moved his hand to his waistband behind his back as if he was preparing to brandish a weapon, which directly resulted in the officer-involved shooting.”

Requenes died at the scene. Investigators have not said whether they’ve found a weapon belonging to Requenes.

The Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office will conduct a forensic autopsy on Monday. Officials say this remains a joint investigation between the Lafayette Police Department and Indiana State Police.

Guatemalan woman’s body returned home after fatal shooting in Indiana

Honoring Maria Florinda Rios Perez

CABRICAN, Guatemala (AP) — The body of a Guatemalan woman who was killed earlier this month when she went to clean the wrong home in Indiana in the United States was returned to her native country on Sunday.

María Florinda Ríos Pérez, 32, a mother of four, was killed on the front porch of a home in Whitestown, outside Indianapolis, on Nov. 5.

Late Sunday, her mother Vilma Pérez and other relatives received her body at the capital’s international airport and planned to transport it to her hometown of Cabrican, some 125 miles (200 kilometers) west of Guatemala City.

Prosecutors charged Curt Andersen of Whitestown last week with voluntary manslaughter in connection with her death. Andersen’s trial was scheduled to begin March 30, according to online court records. On Friday, a judge set bail at $25,000 and ordered him to surrender his passport.

According to court documents, Ríos and her husband were part of a house cleaning crew and went to Andersen’s house by mistake. As they tried to unlock Andersen’s door with a key their company had given them, Andersen fired a shot through the door without warning. The bullet hit Rios in the head. Her husband was not hurt.

Andersen told investigators he heard someone trying to unlock his front door and thought someone was trying to break into his home.

Over the weekend, women in Cabrican cooked food in preparation for friends and relatives who would attend the wake and burial. At her parents’ home, flowers and pictures of Ríos adorned an altar. Cabrican sits in a valley where most residents are Mam, an Indigenous Mayan people.

Ríos’ sister, 19-year-old Yeimy Paola Ríos Pérez, said María had left Guatemala two years earlier with two of her daughters, hiring a smuggler to get them to the U.S. because they were told adults with children were being allowed to enter, her sister said.

“It was a lot of work going with the girls,” she said. They went to Indiana because five of her siblings and her father were there.

Yeimy recalled her last conversation with her sister days before she died.

“She was really happy because there was only a week until her son turned 1 year old and she was getting everything ready to celebrate the boy’s birthday,” Yeimy said.
