Referee explains controversial pass interference call in Colts loss

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — There was a crucial, controversial pass interference penalty on Colts cornerback Kenny Moore II in the fourth quarter that gave the Texans a first down and extended the drive.

Later that drive, Nico Collins scored the go-ahead touchdown for the Texans and the Colts lost, 20-16.

Referee Clay Martin explained the pass interference call.

“The calling official had an arm grab at the top of the route,” Martin said. “When you look back, the ball was in the air, and when you see the ball in the air, that makes it pass interference.”

Moore II was asked about the play after the game as well.

“Just two guys being competitive,” Moore II said.

“They said I touched him, so I did,” Moore II added.

The play clock had reached zero before the ball was snapped on that play as well. Martin explained why delay of game was not called.

“The back judge is the calling official and there is a process on that,” Martin said. “When the clock hits zero, he looks down to the ball and if the ball is snapped as he looks down from the clock to the ball, we leave that alone. That’s what he ruled on the play.”

On the extra point after Collins scored the touchdown, Texans kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn’s attempt went over the upright, and the extra point was ruled good.

“The calling official had the ball above the upright and completely inside the outside edge of the upright and so he ruled a successful try,” Martins said. “Since the ball was above the upright it’s not reviewable.”

The Colts are back in action on Sunday, December 7 on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Indiana Fever hosts ‘Red Out’ for Game 2 against Atlanta Dream

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — It’s win or stay home for the Indiana Fever on Tuesday night. The team will face off against the Atlanta Dream in Game 2 of Round 1 of the WNBA Playoffs.

This year the WNBA implemented a new format, allowing for Indiana’s first postseason home game since 2016.

Fever GM and Chief Operating Officer Amber Cox says the team is hoping to even the series and force a Game 3.

“The crowd is going to be super ramped up as they have been all year,” Cox said. “Think about some mainstays for this franchise, specifically Kelsey Mitchell, who’s been here for now eight seasons. This is her first home playoff game. So we’re really, really excited.”

Injuries plagued the team all season, with six players declared out for Game 2.

The Fever fell to the Dream in Game 1 in Atlanta on Sunday 80-68, despite a 27-point outing by Mitchell.

“We need to just clean up a few things in terms of our game plan. Limit second chance points. They’re a great rebounding team,” Cox said. “They’re very big on the interior. two dominant post players, and then we need to defend the three-point line. They have great three-point shooters as well.”

Before Tuesday’s playoff game, the Fever will host a free pregame party. No ticket to the game is required to get in to the party.

There will be live music, activities for kids, concessions and of course plenty of basketball on Bicentennial Unity Plaza.

“We’ve got a lot planned for the fans out on the plaza pregame,” Cox said. “It’s a ‘Red Out’. So we’ve got ‘Now You Know ‘T-shirts for every fan [with a ticket to the game]. Great entertainment. Wynonna Judd’s here singing the anthem. We’ve got DJ Kool at halftime. So it’s going to be a party.”

The pregame party starts at 5 p.m. Game 2 will tip off just after 7:30 p.m.

Tickets to the game were still available late Tuesday morning.

2026 IndyCar season kicks off with 4 races in 5 weeks

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The 2026 NTT IndyCar Series schedule is out, and it’s jam-packed with multiple new events, all the glory and spectacle of the Month of May, and a return of the season finale to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna

The schedule dropped Tuesday morning and includes 17 races between March 1 and Sept. 6.

Fans who have wished for more races at the start of the season will get their wish in 2026, says NTT IndyCar Series and IMS President Doug Boles.

“We’re going to kickstart the season in fitting fashion, with four races in five weeks,” Boles said in a release Tuesday.

The season will open on March 1 with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, followed by a joint weekend with NASCAR at Phoenix Raceway on March 7. A week later, the stars of IndyCar will take on the new 14-turn, 2.73 Streets of Arlington Circuit in Arlington, Texas.

The month will conclude with a return to Barber Motorsports Park on March 29.

The season will continue with the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 19, a staple event entering its sixth decade. After that, it will be time to go “back home again,” with a race on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course on May 9. Indy 500 qualifying is set for May 16-17, with the 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 24.

Summer events include the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix on May 31, the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway on June 7, and the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America on June 21. The Fourth of July will see racing at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, followed by a July 19 race at Nashville Superspeedway with the FIFA World Cup 26 Finale serving as the lead-in.

The final stretch of the season includes a stop at Portland International Raceway on Aug. 9, a trek to Ontario for the Streets of Markham on Aug. 16, and the Milwaukee Mile Doubleheader weekend Aug. 29-30.

The season finale and presentation of the Astor Challenge Cup returns to historic WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca for the IndyCar Grand Prix of Monterey on Sept. 6.

“Once again INDYCAR will have the most challenging schedule in all of motorsports with its nearly even mix of ovals, road courses and street circuits,” Boles said. “This championship format and diverse schedule test driver and team adaptability and truly celebrate the most complete driver and team at the end of the season.”

For the second consecutive season, all NTT IndyCar Series races will be broadcast on FOX, with the IndyCar Radio Network providing audio coverage of all events on SiriusXM Channel 218 and the official IndyCar app.

Start times for 2026 events will be announced soon.

Colts WR Alec Pierce draws rave reviews from teammates, coaches

Colts WR Alec Pierce draws rave reviews from teammates, coaches

WESTFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — Saturday was Day 4 of Colts training camp, and it also marked the end of the first week of practices at Grand Park.

While the attention has been on the open quarterback competition between Anthony Richardson Sr. and Daniel Jones, whoever wins the starting job will have a talented group of wide receivers to throw the ball to.

One of them is Alec Pierce, who established himself as one of the best deep threats in the NFL in 2024, leading the league in yards per reception (22.3).

Pierce’s teammate Michael Pittman Jr. tabbed him as the best in the league.

“Alec’s doing what I think he’s always done,” Pittman Jr. said. “He’s just very consistent. He’s very fast. And he’s the best deep ball threat in the NFL.”

He added that Pierce can do anything, and is not just a deep ball threat. He said fans may see more intermediate and shallow throws to Pierce this season.

His head coach Shane Steichen said the fourth-year wide receiver is only improving.

“He just keeps making strides,” Steichen said. “Last year was a hell of a year for him and it carried over into the offseason and spring and he’s continued it in training camp. An explosive player that’s got a ton of ability and is making a lot of plays for us.”

Pierce has been able to use training camp to improve against different coverages.

“It’s great getting different looks from the defense this year,” Pierce said. “A lot more man coverage. It kind of gives you a lot of opportunities to work. Basically every play is a one-on-one opportunity, so you really get to work on your route running and craft and like that, so it’s definitely been a lot of good work this camp, just receivers versus DBs (defensive backs) and stuff and I think it’s a lot of opportunity to get better.”

Pierce had career highs in yards and touchdowns in 2024. He caught 37 passes for 824 yards and seven touchdowns.

Colts’ Michael Pittman Jr. puts Tyler Warren through off-field ‘test’

WESTFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — Colts wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. was asked about his impressions of rookie tight end Tyler Warren.

Instead of talking about the talent that Warren has shown on the field, Pittman went with an off-the-field story.

“Funny story about that is, on the first day of camp, I called him to take me to Meijer because I needed a coffee machine,” Pittman said. “My car was there, I just wanted to see if he’d take me. And he just said ‘Alright.’ And then he came down and took me within five minutes. I was like, this guy right here is a team guy. I think he’s great.”

“My car was sitting right there,” Pittman said. “But I just tested him to see if he would take me. So then I called him and he was downstairs in less than five minutes and took me to Meijer and I got a little coffee machine.”

Pittman did not make Warren pay for the coffee machine.

Warren has drawn rave reviews from other teammates as well.

“You can tell he’s going to be really good,” Colts safety Camryn Bynum said. “He’s one of those guys that if you didn’t tell me that he just got drafted, I wouldn’t know. He operates as a veteran. He can do a lot. Obviously we haven’t been in pads yet, but I can tell he can block just by his footwork and just the intent that he has. But also his route running and yards after the catch is going to be elite, and I can tell that from him now. So it’s cool being able to go against him, and being able to go against him in practice is going to prepare us to go against any tight end in the game.”

Warren made a one-handed catch at training camp on Saturday, which received an applause from the fans. The Colts rookie is appreciative off all the support he’s received in Indianpolis.

“It’s been awesome,” Warren said. “I really have enjoyed Indy since I got here and really like the area. The fans have been great. Out here we’ve had great support the first two days and it’s been awesome just being in the city.”

The Colts return to the practice field during training camp on Monday, with practice from 10-11:15 a.m.

Caitlin Clark to miss fourth straight game on Sunday

CHICAGO (WISH) — Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Chicago Sky, per the Fever’s injury report.

This will be the fourth straight game Clark has missed due to her right groin injury.

Clark underwent further medical evaluations earlier this week, and the Fever announced there were no additional injuries or damage found.

The Fever also stated there is no timetable for Clark’s return.

Clark injured her right groin in the fourth quarter of the Fever’s win against the Connecticut Sun on July 15. The Fever are 1-2 without Clark while she’s been out with this injury, losing two games on the road against the New York Liberty and beating the Las Vegas Aces at home on Thursday.

Sunday will be the 13th regular season game that Clark will miss this season. She also missed the Fever’s win in the Commissioner’s Cup championship game, as well as the All-Star Game and Three-Point Contest during All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis.

Clark has averaged 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 8.8 assists per game in 13 games played this season.

Clark has also dealt with a left quad injury and a left groin injury this season.

The Fever are 8-5 with Clark this season and 5-7 without Clark in regular season games. The Fever also beat the Minnesota Lynx without Clark to win the Commissioner’s Cup.

The Fever (13-12) are 6th in the WNBA standings.

Indiana tips off against the Sky on the road at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

NASCAR championship weekend goes to Homestead in 2026, starting a rotating formula

MIAMI (AP) — NASCAR’s championship weekend will return to Homestead-Miami Speedway next year, marking the first time since 2019 that the title-winners will be crowned at the South Florida track.

NASCAR made the announcement Tuesday. Its three series — the truck series, the Xfinity Series and the Cup Series — will see their seasons come to a close at Homestead from Nov. 6-8, 2026.

It isn’t a permanent return, though: NASCAR said that championship weekends are going to be on a rotation “to ensure that the season’s exciting conclusion is shared amongst NASCAR’s marquee venues and key markets.”

“As we move forward, the rotating model will provide new challenges for competitors as well as opportunities for unique venues to host our loyal fans at NASCAR Championship Weekend,” NASCAR executive vice president Ben Kennedy said.

Phoenix will play host to this year’s championship weekend again, and NASCAR said it will be part of the title-deciding-location rotation in the future as well.

Homestead-Miami was the championship weekend site from 2002 through 2019. There are three active drivers who were crowned NASCAR champions at Homestead — Kyle Busch in 2015 and 2019, Brad Keselowski in 2012 and Joey Logano in 2018. Logano has also won the title at Phoenix in two of the last three seasons, including last year.

And all seven of Jimmie Johnson’s NASCAR titles came at Homestead, which has renamed a tunnel in his honor to commemorate those championships.

NASCAR decided after the 2001 season to move its truck and Cup series races to one track, in order to create a season-ending championship celebration. Homestead-Miami was the original site, and it moved to Phoenix starting in 2020.
