Hamilton County Commissioners declare State of Emergency amid flooding

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — The Hamilton County Commissioners have declared a State of Emergency as flooding worsens following overnight rainfall.

More than 30 roads are now closed across the county.

Major routes impacted include State Road 37, closed north of State Road 32 in Noblesville; State Road 19, closed between Logan Street and Field Drive; and U.S. 31 near Tipton.

“Declaring a State of Emergency gives us the ability to respond quickly, coordinate resources, and get help where it’s needed most,” said Commissioner Steve Dillinger. “Our priority is keeping people safe and supporting the communities being hit hardest.”

The Commissioners office said flooding is straining resources in Atlanta, Arcadia, Jackson Township, and White River Township.

The Jackson Township Fire Department has been flooded, a wastewater substation along State Road 19 in Atlanta has gone offline, and the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office has responded to multiple water rescues.

Hamilton County has upgraded its Travel Advisory to a Travel Watch. Only essential travel — such as commuting to work or responding to emergencies — is recommended.

The White River is expected to crest near 20 feet around 2 a.m. Saturday. Officials warn it could go higher with more rain in the forecast.

“Please stay away from high water and never drive around barricades or through a flooded roadway,” said Ryan Tennessen, Deputy Director of Hamilton County Emergency Management. “Conditions can change quickly. Be prepared to leave — don’t wait until the water is at your door.”

Residents are asked to follow direction from local law enforcement and first responders.
