PORTAGE, Ind. (WISH) — A person died in a structure fire on the north side of the northwest Indiana city of Portage during a severe weather event Tuesday, police said in a Facebook post.
The post said emergency responders faced delays reaching the fire due to storm debris and hazardous conditions.
The person’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin and the police investigation.
Investigators were working to determine if an explosion is possibly linked to the fire.
The Portage city government urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel to allow emergency crews to work safely.
Officials will hold a press conference at 6 p.m. local time Tuesday (7 p.m. ET) at the Portage Police Department, 6260 Central Ave., to provide updates.
Portage, with 38,600 residents, sits along Lake Michigan.
