BROWNSBURG, Ind. (WISH) — Brownsburg will soon become the most recent of central Indiana communities to consider implementing a wheel tax on all drivers.
According to a meeting agenda available on the Town of Brownsburg’s website, the ordinance outlines a proposal for a municipal vehicle excise surtax and a municipal wheel tax.
The $25 surtax rate would be standard across all vehicle types, including passenger cars, motorcycles, electric bikes, “collector vehicles,” trucks, trailers, mini trucks, and military vehicles.
The rate also extends to vehicles in higher weight classes, like semis, buses, and recreational vehicles.
If adopted, the rates would go into effect on Jan. 1, and would qualify the town for a Community Crossings Matching Grant, a grant through the Indiana Department of Transportation that provides funding for road repairs, bridge preservation, and other infrastructure projects.
On Monday, the Indianapolis City-County Council overturned a previous veto by Mayor Hogsett to move forward with a citywide wheel tax. On Aug. 4, the City of Beech Grove also approved its own tax.
Thursday’s council meeting is set for 7 p.m. at the Brownsburg Town Hall.
