Westfield’s historic Green Building to be relocated, restored

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The oldest commercial building in the city of Westfield is getting a new lease on life.

Westfield’s historic Green Building will be relocated and restored in 2026 as part of a $2,393,000 project approved by the Board of Public Works.

Brandt Construction has been contracted to carry out the relocation and restoration of the Green Building, which was constructed in 1837.

The Indiana Department of Transportation will cover 50% of the project cost as part of the State Road 32 improvement project.

“As we move toward Westfield’s bright future, we cannot forget where we came from,” Mayor Scott Willis said in a release. “This project completes the preservation work started by the previous administration and protects this piece of our history for generations to come.”

The city will retain ownership of the Green Building once renovations are complete, and it will be maintained under the stewardship of the Westfield Historic Preservation Commission.

While restoration is underway, the city will issue a request for proposals to determine the future use of the building as a commercial space.

Over its long history, the Green Building has housed The Old Corner Drug Store in the 1860s, Funderburgh Grocery, the town post office, Pickett’s Cafeteria, Erika’s Café, and most recently, Dance Innovation.

Excavation and concrete work are expected to begin in late October or early November, weather permitting.

Once Duke Energy completes the underground utility relocation, the building will be moved to its permanent location on North Union Street, just south of the Basile Westfield Playhouse, in early 2026.

The relocation and restoration of the Green Building will preserve a significant piece of Westfield’s history while paving the way for future commercial use.
