Indianapolis Ballet on Daybreak
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indianapolis Ballet opens its season at Newfields on Friday and Saturday nights with the theme ‘Legacy in Motion.’
The performances will showcase two major pieces by New York City Ballet founder George Balanchine, ‘The Four Temperaments’ and ‘Concerto Barocco.’
“His works are just sought after by many companies. Dancers want to dance his works,” Indianapolis Ballet executive director Don Steppe shared on WISH-TV’s Daybreak, explaining the significance of the theme. “We’re continuing his legacy through the performance tonight.”
Steffy touts Balanchine’s style with strong lines, patterns and energy. “In the ballet world, it’s a little bit of an athletic approach,” he says, “You love the challenge, whether it’s emotional (or) technical. It drives you forward to then ultimately culminate in a beautiful, beautiful performance.”
The season opener also includes a world premiere of a new piece from the ballet’s founder and artistic director, Victoria Liris, set to “Moonlight Serenade.”
“It’s just a really beautiful, beautiful piece,” Steffy says. “Last year she did a great work from her Greek heritage, and people just really enjoyed it. So it’s going to be a surprise.”
Opening weekend performances are scheduled for 7:30 PM tonight and Saturday, with a matinee at 3 PM on Sunday. Tickets start at just more than $35.
