INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Confusion at Monon Trail crossings has sparked safety concerns between drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department posted a message online Thursday morning to clear up any questions about who actually has the right-of-way.
“At these intersections, who has the right-of-way? It depends,” said IMPD Captain Shane Foley.” Sometimes, it’s pedestrians if they’re in the intersection. Sometimes, it’s the motorist.”
According to Foley, the law says that if a pedestrian or cyclist is in the crosswalk in an uncontrolled intersection, the cars must stop. The reminder to the community came after an Indianapolis City-County Council member wanted clarification.
“But what we want is pedestrians and cyclists to stop, look around, because even if they have the right of way, a crash between a pedestrian and a cyclist, the pedestrian is going to lose,” Foley said.
While there isn’t specific crash data that’s tied to Monon Trail intersections, Foley everyone has a role to play in preventing accidents. Safety tips include pausing before crossing, wearing reflective gear, and going at a slower pace.
“As motorists are approaching these intersections, we ask them to slow down and be aware of pedestrians, be aware of cyclists, Foley said. “As pedestrians and cyclists are approaching, we’re asking them to stop at the intersection and make sure that the vehicles make sure that they’re there, and make sure they come to a stop.”
“Don’t assume it’s safe just because a driver waves you across,” Foley said. “There may be a blind spot if there’s a crosswalk across multiple lanes.
Foley removed a sign saying it was a possible danger for drivers and people crossing the intersection to see each other, especially at night.
“At some of these intersections, they’re obstructed from motorists to see if somebody is approaching,” Foley said. “That’s why it’s extremely important for cyclists, cyclists, and drivers to all use caution at these intersections.”
Foley said it’s all about awareness and caution. The department hopes reminders like this will help stop serious crashes in the future.
