Fever guard Sophie Cunningham speaks out on recent ‘distraction’

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indiana Fever are getting ready for their first home game in two weeks when they face the Las Vegas Aces on Thursday night. The Fever will look to get back on the winning track after falling at Minnesota on Sunday.

There has been a lot of conversation surrounding Sophie Cunningham in the last week or so. An article was recently published in which she voiced support for eliminating transgender girls and women from girls’ and women’s sports. It’s created a lot of attention on each side of the issue. She talked about all the outside noise this morning at practice.

“There’s just so much distraction,” Cunningham said. “I think the WNBA media, all we ever do is cover everything except basketball and it’s like, what are we doing? You can talk about other things. I think those are great stories. I think it shows fans who people are outside of the court, but I also think we got to keep the main thing the main thing. I think when it comes to the Minnesota game, I think there’s so much distraction. For me, I want to get back to basketball. It’s always been about basketball. That interview happened in February when I was asked a question.”

“I was asked a question, and that’s simply what it was,” Cunningham added. “I just wasn’t making a statement to make a statement. So I was trying to clear the air, and I did that back in February. So it is what it is. Like I said, we’re in the middle of the season. I’m going to keep it at that. We talk about a bunch of distraction. Our team is good. My teammates are good. Our locker room is great.”

The Fever are scheduled to tip off against the Aces at 7 p.m. at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
