1 person shot, killed by police in Lafayette
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An investigation was underway Friday in Tippecanoe County after a fatal police shooting in Lafayette.
Around 12:15 a.m., an officer with the Lafayette Police Department conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of South Street and Sagamore Parkway on a suspicion of impaired driving.
“During the stop, the male driver made statements indicating a risk of harm to himself before fleeing the scene in his vehicle. LPD officers, following departmental policy, did not initiative a vehicle pursuit,” Lafayette PD said in a release.
About an hour later, Lafayette police officers and state troopers located the suspect at the Waterford Court Apartments, which is an apartment complex of I-65, just north of State Road 26.
Lafayette police say the suspect parked his car in the 200 block of Porsche Lane East, which is an address within the apartment complex.
“When officers confronted him, the suspect was non-compliant with verbal commands and stated he was armed with a weapon,” LPD said in a release. “The suspect then moved his hand to his waistband behind his back as if he was preparing to brandish a weapon, which directly resulted in the officer-involved shooting.”
Officers gave the suspect medical aid but he died at the scene. Police did not say if a firearm was found at the scene.
There were no other occupants in the vehicle and no officers or civilians were injured during the incident.
The involved Lafayette Police Department officers have been placed on administrative leave, per departmental policy. Their names have not been released.
The name of the suspect is being withheld until next of kin notification by the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office.
The Lafayette Police Department and Indiana State Police are conducting a joint investigation into the incident.
No other information was immediately available.
