INDIANAPOLIS — A boy is dead after Speedway fire crews found him unresponsive Friday evening during a water rescue in a pond at an apartment complex.
As we reported, Speedway and Wayne Township fire departments and officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called around 6:22 p.m. Friday for a water rescue and welfare check of a child in the 600 block of Magdalene Lane. That is in the Boardwalk at Westlake Apartments and Townhomes, southeast of the I-465 interchange with West 10th Street in Indianapolis.
Speedway Fire Department arrived first, followed shortly by Wayne Township crews, according to Battalion Chief Eric Bannister with the Wayne Township Fire Department. Speedway fire crews found the boy in the water, and he was taken to a children’s hospital, where he later died.
IMPD detectives believe the child’s death was an accidental drowning, but Marion County Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of death at a later time.
