INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Students in the automotive program at Arsenal Technical High School are putting the finishing touches on a 1951 Chevrolet Deluxe–a 73-year-old classic that represents not just the past, but the future.
By rebuilding this ’51 Chevy, the students are learning modern skills that they can apply after graduation in one of the nation’s fastest-growing industries: automotive technology.
According to the 2024 Technician Supply and Demand Report, the U.S. will need nearly one million new technicians across transportation sectors by 2028 with 471,000 of those in the automotive side.
IPS says the automotive program, which is supported by partnerships with organizations like Carvana and inspired by NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson, “connects classroom learning with real-world career pathways” and ensures students are ready to join this in-demand field.
On Tuesday, Arsenal Tech students will get to share their work with Indianapolis native Scott Hoke, the longtime TV host of Mecum Auctions. Hoke will talk with the students, check out their work on the Chevy Deluxe, and discuss how automotive skills can translate into lasting careers.
