INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An adult and child were hurt after leaping from the second story of a burning apartment building early Friday morning.
Capt. Eric Banister with the Wayne Township Fire Department said crews first received a report of an apartment fire with entrapment around 3:15 a.m.
When firefighters arrived at the Park at Greenhill apartments off Rockville Road, they were met with “heavy fire” in the stairwell of one of the two-story apartment buildings.
They also noticed several tenants escaping the “intense” fires, some being forced to jump from second-floor windows.
Commanders promptly upgraded the fire to a “second alarm,” calling for extra firefighters and equipment. Banister says crews faced “extreme challenges” as the fire cut off primary escape routes.
“Crews initiated aggressive firefighting operations and conducted vent-enter-search tactics to attempt to reach and rescue trapped occupants, but fortunately, all occupants had self-evacuated before their arrival,” he said.
An adult and a child escaping the fire were injured after jumping from a second story; they were taken to hospitals in conditions described as “alert and conscious.”
The fire’s cause is still under investigation. The fire department says it will release information on building damages and displaced residents when available.
