Whitestown shooting investigation update coming Monday

LEBANON, Ind. (WISH) – Prosecutors are expected to publicly announce whether there will be formal criminal charges stemming from the death of Maria Florinda Rios Perez on Monday.

Boone County Prosecutor Kent Eastwood has scheduled a press conference Monday for an update on the Whitestown shooting after canceling a planned update on Friday due to a family emergency.

Eastwood has held off on announcing whether there would be charges until reviewing the investigation into the death of Rios Perez, who was shot outside a Whitestown home on Nov. 5 when she arrived for a cleaning job at a mistaken address.

The death of the 32-year-old wife and mother has led to demonstrations outside the Boone County Prosecutor’s office as family and supporters have demanded accountability. Online fundraisers have raised more than $240,000 for the family.

The Whitestown Metropolitan Police Department has withheld the name of the people involved in the shooting, pending formal charges.

Eastwood said “the unique circumstances of this case make a careful, detailed review essential,” explaining his review of the case will include consideration of Indiana’s “stand your ground” law, which allows people to use force when they feel threatened.

The Boone County Prosecutor’s Office could charge the shooter, decline to charge the shooter, or refer the matter to a grand jury for a final decision.
