INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Rain moves in this afternoon with unsettled weather for the holiday weekend.

Quiet morning

High pressure remains overhead with relatively dry air in place over much of central and northern Indiana. Dew points are creeping into the upper 50s and lower 60s in southern Indiana, signaling more muggy conditions heading our way.

Rain spreads north through the afternoon

A front will slide in from the south, bringing scattered showers, a few downpours, and a rumble of thunder or two. Rain will begin this afternoon and become more widespread by late afternoon into the evening hours.

The arrival of rain will be close to noon, with showers possible anytime during the second half of the day on Friday. It will be a close call for finishing practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The concerts scheduled for this afternoon are likely going to be wet.

Meanwhile, highs will run cool, only reaching the mid-60s this afternoon.

Rain continues tonight

The surface low tracking through the area will keep rain going into the early overnight hours, especially across the eastern half of the state. Rain will diminish from west to east as the low pushes east of Indiana overnight.

Lingering showers Saturday

A few showers will be possible early Saturday morning across the eastern portions of the state. Otherwise, conditions will gradually improve with mostly to partly cloudy skies. High temperatures will top out in the mid-70s, and it will feel a bit more humid.

Warmer race day with storm chances

A larger upper-level trough will move through on Sunday, bringing the threat for showers and thunderstorms — mainly in the afternoon during peak heating. While widespread rain is not expected, a few downpours and thunderstorms could develop during the race. We’ll need some luck on our side to get through all 200 laps without a delay.

Meanwhile, high temperatures will top out in the upper 70s.

Some lingering rain chances, especially across the southern portions of the state, will persist on Memorial Day as a front stalls over southern Indiana. High temperatures will reach around 80° on Monday.

Above-normal temperatures continue

Warm and humid conditions will continue as we head back to work on Tuesday and through the rest of the week. There will be spotty storm chances with peak afternoon heating mid-week, mainly across the southern third of the state. Most areas will likely stay dry, with highs in the low to mid-80s through the end of next week.
