New groundwater system to expedite cleanup at Indianapolis Superfund site

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday night told residents on the west side of Indianapolis that a groundwater extraction system at the Reilly Tar Superfund site will remain operational until the completion of a new system in February.

The new system was designed to capture contaminants in groundwater more effectively, aiming to meet cleanup standards 5 to 10 years faster than the existing system.

The EPA hosted an open house to discuss the installation of the new groundwater system with the public. The event aimed to inform residents about the ongoing construction and the benefits of the new system.

Dion Novak, a remedial project manager with EPA Region 5, said, “The reason we had the meetings before was to tell people what to expect, to see. Now, they’re actually seeing what we told them to expect to see.”

Wells are being installed to treat water with oxygen as part of efforts to improve water quality.

The Superfund site is northwest of the intersection of West Minnesota Street and South Tibbs Avenue.
