Murat Shrine Circus celebrates 70 years with ringmaster Ari Steeples

9-23-25 Murat Shrine Circus Returns to Indy

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Ari Steeples, a third-generation bear trainer, is set to lead the Murat Shrine Circus as its ringmaster, continuing a family tradition in the circus industry.

Steeples, who became a ringmaster at the age of 19, has been the voice of several shrine circuses across the United States. He grew up in the circus world, starting his journey at nine years old by shoveling for bears before advancing to training them by the age of 16.

“I started at the shovel end of a bear and eventually worked my way to the leash,” Steeples said, reflecting on his early days in the circus.

The Murat Shrine Circus, now in its 70th edition, is a testament to the enduring appeal of circus entertainment. Steeples believes that circuses offer a unique form of family entertainment, providing something for everyone from clowns to high wire walkers.

“At the circus there’s something for everybody from one to 101,” Steeples explained, emphasizing the inclusive nature of circus performances.

Circuses are facing changes due to evolving laws regarding animal acts, with some states imposing bans on certain animals like elephants. Steeples acknowledges these challenges but remains optimistic about the circus’s ability to adapt.

“The animals are starting to become less, you know, like we’re going to be able to bring elephants here. But I don’t know for how many more years because of the way the laws and everything are changing,” Steeples noted.

Despite these changes, the circus community maintains a strong family atmosphere, with performers often knowing each other for many years. Steeples himself has grown up alongside many of the performers he now leads.

“A lot of these performers I’ve known my entire life,” Steeples said, highlighting the close-knit nature of the circus community.

As the Murat Shrine Circus prepares for its upcoming shows, Ari Steeples continues to uphold the traditions of the circus while navigating the industry’s evolving landscape. His dedication to the craft and the community ensures that the circus remains a beloved form of entertainment.

The Murat Shrine Circus will be performing at the Old National Centre on September 26, 27, and 28. For more information, click here.
