Mick Schumacher to test with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing at IMS road course

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher, is set to test an IndyCar for the first time at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in October.

Schumacher, who currently competes in the World Endurance Championship for Alpine, will test with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing on the IMS road course on Monday, Oct. 13, the team announced Friday.

“I am very much looking forward to driving my first INDYCAR test,” Schumacher said in a release. “The same goes for driving this car at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the first time, a racetrack with a big history and that my dad has driven on before. I am excited to see which special features it holds.”

Schumacher, 26, a native of Switzerland, made 44 starts in Formula One with a best finish of sixth place and has earned four podiums in WEC to date. He most recently drove an open-wheel race car as the Mercedes F1 reserve driver while competing in WEC in 2024.

The test at the IMS road course will allow Schumacher to become familiar with the feel of an IndyCar, “with an eye toward possible participation in the future,” IndyCar said Friday.

“I am very curious to understand the special features and characteristics of this race car, which is different from the cars I am used to driving, yet similar, and I remain very interested in gaining experience in the diverse world of motorsport. Great to be able to see what it is all about and how difficult it is, since I hear a lot about how tough it is physically,” Schmacher said. “This first INDYCAR test will be an experience to treasure, and I am very much looking forward to driving a car where I can see my wheels.”

RLL co-owner and 1986 Indianapolis 500 champion Bobby Rahal says the thought of seeing Mick at IMS in one of the team’s cars is “very exciting.”

“I think it’s going to be a great day for RLL and also for Mick as he gets his first experience in an Indy car. Obviously, he’s got a great deal of talent and knowing that we’ve had pretty good setups for the IMS road course, it should give him a good baseline to start from,” Rahal said in a release.

The Schumacher family has had great success at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the past. Michael Schumacher won the United States Grand Prix five times on the original, 2.605-mile configuration of the IMS road course (2000, 2003-06).

The Oct. 13 test won’t be Mick Schumacher’s first visit to Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He attended Miller Lite Carb Day in May alongside friend and former RLL sports car driver Dirk Muller.

The 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season begins Sunday, March 1, with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
