LYNN, Ind. (WISH) — Officials are hoping everyone from an eastern Indiana town shows up Saturday for a photo with its longstanding water tower that’s soon to be demolished.
The town of 946 residents broke ground in August 2024 for a new water tower, replacing the one that turned 100 in 2022.
Residents knew the water tower’s time was limited when it ran dry in August 2019, on the first day of school that year, due to a leak under U.S. 27. Residents had to boil water or turn to bottled water for a while.
But, locals aren’t saying good riddance to bad rubbish.
A Facebook event post from the Lynn Fire Department on Wednesday said, “Water tower Community Photo will be taken Saturday, 9/27, at 10am for the people of the town. Please arrive by 9:45 and if you’re driving, please park at the First Church of Christ.
“We hope to see the whole town present for this photo. The short notice is due to the demolition date being moved up.”
According to minutes from the Feb. 22, 2022, meeting of the Randolph County Commissioners, the new water tower and other improvements to the Lynn Water Co. system were to total $2.5 million, with design costs of $150,000.
During that 2022 meeting, a Town Council member noted that the water tower had survived the March 20, 1986, tornado that damaged a nearby elementary school and some homes.
