INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Approximately 300 Indiana National Guard soldiers are being deployed to Washington D.C. starting in December to support the D.C. National Guard in enhancing safety measures in the nation’s capital.
The deployment comes as a response to a request from the D.C. National Guard, whose safety mission aims to assist civilian agencies and local law enforcement in reducing crime and minimizing property damage.
Gov. Mike Braun authorized the deployment, saying in a release, “Hoosiers are proud of our Guardsmen, who are well-trained and fully prepared for this mission,” he said. “We are grateful for their service and support in our nation’s capital.”
Maj. Gen. Larry Muennich, Indiana National Guard adjutant general, says the Hoosier Guardsmen are “ready for this mission.”
“National Guard soldiers and airmen are uniquely qualified to help in these types of situations. Our Hoosier Guardsmen regularly prepare, train and work side-by-side with civilian first responders, and our Guardsmen are ready for this mission as well.”
The participating soldiers are primarily from units based in Bloomington and Gary, which are home to field artillery and engineer battalions. In preparation, the Guard says the soldiers will undergo training at Camp Atterbury before their departure in early December. They will continue their training after arriving in Washington.
The mission is expected to last around four months. Indiana Guardsmen will be replacing soldiers and airmen from other states who have been mobilized since August.
