Fort Wayne releases video of police shooting
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WISH) – The Fort Wayne Police Department on Friday released bodycam video on YouTube of a fatal police shooting that happened more than seven months ago.
Police say officers fired on and killed Jacob Leckenby, 33, who stabbed an officer during the Sept. 22 encounter.
Police had responded to a domestic disturbance call at an apartment in the 2100 block of Saint Marys Avenue. Officers reported that Leckenby emerged from the apartment and stabbed an officer multiple times with a knife. The officer’s injuries were not life-threatening, according to police.
Leckenby then approached the officers while still armed with the knife, despite repeated commands to drop the weapon. Officers subsequently fired their weapons, and Leckenby died at the scene. A knife was recovered by police.
Before officers fired, Leckenby was recorded saying, “Shoot me! … Where do you want it in?” as officers repeatedly commanded him to drop the knife.
The officers involved in the incident were identified as Reginald Ellington, commissioned on Sept. 12, 2024; Nicholas Williams, commissioned on June 3, 2019; and Myles Mayfield, commissioned on June 29, 2023. A “Critical Incident Video Brief” of the officer-involved shooting has been released.
The Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office announced in January it had concluded that the use of force was justified.
Both the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Indiana State Police concluded that the officers’ actions were consistent with department policy, and the use of force was reasonable to prevent serious injury or death.
