Purdue grads named astronaut candidates

HOUSTON, Texas (WISH) — NASA has announced its 2025 class of astronaut candidates, including two Purdue University graduates, Adam Fuhrmann and Yuri Kubo.

Yuri Kubo, a native of Columbus, Indiana, talked Monday afternoon with News 8 from Johnson Space Center, expressing his excitement about joining NASA’s latest class of astronaut trainees, a dream he has had since childhood.

“I’ve been wanting to do this since I was a little kid, since I was 7, so yeah, this is the culmination of a life’s work,” Kubo said.

Kubo, 40, joins NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston as one of 10 new astronaut trainees.

Kubo mentioned that although he and Fuhrmann did not overlap during their time at Purdue, but they have become fast friends.

The training program includes survival training, high-performance jet training, and spacewalk training.

Kubo says he’s proud to represent his home state of Indiana and aims to make his community proud as he embarks on this journey.

Kubo and Fuhrmann are the 29th and 30th members of Purdue’s Cradle of Astronauts. Fuhrmann, an Air Force major, is from Leesburg, Virginia.
