Colts Insider weighs in on crucial mistakes in loss to Rams

Colts Insider breaks down the loss to the Rams

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Colts suffered their first loss of the season on Sunday, falling to the Rams, 27-20.

“I think you learned you can go toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the league, and I think that’s where you’ve got to start,” WISH-TV Colts Insider Kevin Bowen said.

Bowen has covered the Colts for 15 years and is a radio host for 107.5 The Fan, hosting “The Fan Morning Show.” This is his third season as WISH-TV’s Colts Insider.

In the loss, Colts wide receiver AD Mitchell had two crucial miscues

The first came on a 75 yard catch and run that would have been a touchdown, but Mitchell dropped the ball right before crossing the goal line. The ball went out of bounds in the end zone, resulting in a touchback.

Mitchell also had a holding penalty with less than three minutes left in the fourth quarter that nullified a 53 yard Jonathan Taylor rushing touchdown that would have given the Colts the lead.

Bowen posed the question of whether or not AD Mitchell will for sure play and dress in the Colts next game on Sunday, or if the accountability needs to go a step further.

“I think if you’re going to preach accountability, you’ve got to act on it, too,” Bowen said. “And that will be a storyline to watch this week. Is AD Mitchell playing for your team come Sunday.”

Mitchell spoke to the team to start the team meeting and took accountability, Colts head coach Shane Steichen said on Monday. Steichen also said he had a conversation with Mitchell in his office on Monday, letting him know that the moments in the loss to the Rams do not define who he is as a person.

Steichen added that Mitchell knows he’s going to have to earn it moving forward.

Despite the loss though, Bowen was complimentary of where the Colts are after their first three games.

“You’re 3-1 at the end of the first quarter (of the season),” Bowen said. “You would’ve signed up for that immediately a month ago. And yes, frustrated elements yesterday (Sunday), a lot of the stuff self inflicted. You had a season high 11 penalties. That’s a big, big number under Shane Steichen as well. So I think that’s the stinging feeling on this Monday. You had a great opportunity to go on the road, beat a Hall of Fame quarterback, one of the bets teams in the league, and you just let it slip away from your own doing.”

The Colts look to get back in the win column on Sunday, as they host the Las Vegas Raiders. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Lucas Oil Stadium.
