Wrong-way crash on I-65 kills 2 adults and 1-year-old boy, alcohol ‘likely played a role’

SEYMOUR, Ind. (WISH) — Two adults and a 1-year-old boy died early Sunday after a man driving the wrong way on I-65 crashed into another car near Seymour, Indiana State Police say.

Police said a caller reported the head-on crash just after 2:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-65 in Jackson County, about one mile south of Seymour.

Investigators determined that 51-year-old Theosco Middlebrooks of Louisville, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes in a 2005 Jeep Liberty. Police said Middlebrooks crashed head-on into a 2023 Ford Escape driven by 31-year-old Alyssa Osborn of Scottsburg.

Middlebrooks and Osborn both died at the scene.

Osborn’s 1-year-old son, Waylon, was critically injured and was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Police said the child was properly restrained in a car seat in the rear passenger side of the vehicle.

Investigators believe alcohol consumed by Middlebrooks “likely played a role in the crash.” Toxicology results were pending as of Sunday evening.

All southbound lanes of I-65 just south of Seymour were closed for about four hours for investigation and cleanup. The investigation is ongoing.
