Local missionaries recall trip to Asia
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Jennifer and Emmy McClure spent the past two years in India on a mission to educate women and girls, and they are now planning to continue their work in Indonesia for three years.
The McClures, originally from Boone County, made the decision to sell their belongings and move to India and serve as missionaries with Assemblies of God World Missions. In India, they focused on helping women and girls through education and cultural exchange.
“We sold everything. I quit my career of 25 years, sold my car, my house, everything. We packed up, moved our whole family to India, and it was worth every second of it,” Jennifer McClure explained Sunday on Daybreak.
McClure emphasized the importance of their mission, noting the challenges faced by young girls in India who are often taken out of school in their early teens due to cultural norms.
“A lot of girls, as they come of age, when they’re ready to get married…they get taken out of school. So we took the opportunity to help them by educating them, making sure they know how to read, teaching them English, just so they get a better outcome of their life.”
During their time in India, the McClures immersed themselves in the local culture, learning the language and engaging with the community. Emmy McClure, who was homeschooled, said she enjoyed the experience a lot and “definitely” learned more than she would have at her public school.
The McClures are preparing for their next mission in Indonesia, where they plan to spend three years working with women and girls facing poverty and cultural challenges.
McClure says the community is welcome to offer its support in prayers, encouragement, and financial assistance so the family can continue their work.
