Colts tight end named NFL Rookie of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Colts rookie tight end Tyler Warren is already making his mark in the NFL.

The league announced on Thursday that Warren was named the Week 2 NFL Rookie of the Week.

Warren caught four passes for 79 yards in the Colts’ 29-28 win over the Broncos this past Sunday inside Lucas Oil Stadium.

“He’s just a hell of a football player – natural feel for the game,” Colts head coach Shane Steichen said on Wednesday. “Toughness, gritty. You can put him in different positions, different spots, try to get these matchups that you want with him, along with all the rest of the guys. So like I said, we’ve got to continue that, but he’s playing good football.”

Warren has made a total of 11 catches for 155 yards during his first two games. In fact, the 155 yards are the most for any Colts player in his first two career games in team history. Wide receiver T.Y. Hilton had the previous high of 128 yards in the first two games of his rookie season in 2012.

“I think just him being a little – actually a little savvy,” Colts running back Jonathan Taylor said on Thursday. “Just kind of knowing how to be, when to be under control, when to find and settle down in those open spaces. A lot of times, not only tight ends, but just rookies in general – you’re in the NFL, first year, you want to go full-speed. You want to play fast. You want to play aggressive. And the tough part is finding like, ‘Okay well, obviously, I see a void here in the zone. Let me just throttle down a little bit.’ So just having that knack of knowing when to turn on the gas, when to turn it off, finding those open spots like a veteran player is very encouraging to see from him this early.”

Warren has the most receiving yards of any tight end in the NFL so far this season.

The NFL Rookie of the Week is determined each week by a fan vote.

Warren is not the only Colts player who received an award this week. Taylor was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week after having 215 total yards and a touchdown in the win over the Broncos.

The Colts (2-0) are back in action on Sunday in Nashville against the Titans (0-2). Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. EDT inside Nissan Stadium.
