40-year-old receives 150 years for Daviess County murder, attempted murders

WASHINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — A 40-year-old man on Monday was sentenced to 150 years in prison for murder and other charges after a shooting in February 2024 in Daviess County, court records show.

A jury on Aug. 26 found Abel Dubon Castillo, of Washington, Indiana, guilty of murder, two counts of attempted murder, a count of burglary with a deadly weapon, and a count of intimidation.

The shooting happened just after 10:50 p.m. Feb. 4, 2024, at a home in the 1800 block of McCormick Avenue. That’s on the west side of Washington, a Daviess County city of about 12,800 people.

Police had responded to a disturbance involving a firearm at the home. Aracely Torress, 58, died in the shooting, and Dubon Castillo and two other people — Concepcion Rodriguez Martinez, 57, and Yarely Santiago Torres, 35 — were injured.

Daviess County Prosecutor Abby Brown said the shooting involved nearly every member of the Washington Police Department, which shared Brown’s statement. The Republican prosecutor also said a detailed investigation and multiple witnesses “made this a straightforward case to present to the jury.”

The court will appoint someone from the Public Defender’s Office to represent Dubon Castillo in the appeal process.

The city of Washington is about a 2-hour drive southwest of downtown Indianapolis along I-69.
