BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — A 29-year-old transient man was fatally shot in downtown Bloomington, the city’s police department said Saturday morning.
The shooting was reported about 9:40 p.m. Friday at the intersection of West Howe Street and South Morton Street, an area with several shops and businesses just north of West Second Street.
Witnesses told police they heard a gunshot and then saw the man on the ground. The man, who police found with a gunshot wound to the upper torso, died about an hour later at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. The man’s name was not provided in a news release issued Saturday morning from Bloomington Police Department.
Investigators think the shooting happened after a disturbance between the man and the driver of a passenger car. The shooter reportedly exited a dark-colored sedan, fired a handgun, and then fled the scene at high speed.
Witnesses reported hearing a female screaming from inside the sedan as it sped away, traveling westbound on Howe Street and then northbound on Madison Street.
Police urged residents of the area to review camera footage that might have captured the sedan entering or leaving the neighborhood, and contact Detective Chris Scott at the Bloomington Police Department with any information.
