INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Springtime is typically Indiana’s most active period for tornadoes.

However, the state still gets tornadoes in other months, especially in the fall, and Nov. 17, 2013, serves as a reminder of that.

The largest outbreak in Indiana state history for November and the second largest of all-time happened on Nov. 17, 2013. Over 70 tornadoes happened regionally.

Earlier this year on April 2, the state tied the fifth-largest outbreak in its history.

Notable tornadoes on Nov. 17, 2013, from other states included the Washington, Illinois, EF-4 and the New Minden, Illinois, EF-4. Unfortunately, eight people died, but no deaths were recorded in Indiana.

On the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which rans from 0 as the weakest and 5 as the strongest, EF-4s have winds from 166-200 mph.

North of I-70 was where most of the tornadic action happened in Indiana on Nov. 17, 2013. Eight EF-2s (111-135 mph) happened in central Indiana alone. The strongest tornado statewide was in Lafayette. An EF-3 (136-165 mph) was on the ground for over 29 miles from Tippecanoe County to Cass County.
