Indianapolis police arrest 16-year-old for murder

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis police have arrested a 16-year-old boy accused of killing a man on the city’s southeast side in July.

Early on the morning of July 25, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to a crash in the 400 block of Griffin Road, just north of Perry Park and Meridian School Road.

Officers arrived and found the driver, 20-year-old Edier Hernandez-Rivera, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Several shell casings were scattered on the ground near the vehicle, according to IMPD.

Hernandez-Rivera was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition and died a short time later.

After collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses, homicide detectives identified a 16-year-old as the suspect. A warrant was issued for the teen on Saturday, and he was found and arrested in Carmel two days later.

IMPD did not share the name of the suspect because of his minor status, but that information will be made available should the case be waived to adult court.

It’s not clear what led to the shooting or if anyone else was involved.
