IMPD releases video from deadly police shooting near Crown Hill Cemetery
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department on Friday afternoon released bodycam and dashcam footage of a deadly police shooting nearly two months ago.
IMPD says Walter McNary, 76, fired at officers during a chase after he had shot and killed his wife. She was found dead around 7:20 a.m. July 24 at a home in the 4800 block of North Ritter Avenue, a residential area near East 46th Street and Arlington Avenue.
Police then tracked McNary to Boulevard Place, where he fled from officers, leading to the chase.
During the pursuit, McNary fired at police multiple times, both while stopped and while driving. The chase ended when McNary reached a dead end on 32nd Street, where he fired again at an officer. The officer returned fire, leading to a brief stand-off.
Police eventually took McNary in custody, recovering a handgun and a rifle next to his vehicle.
McNary was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
Two police cars were damaged during the incident, but no officers were injured.
As I-Team 8 reported a day after the shooting, McNary was a convicted felon with a history of domestic violence.
IMPD’s edited review of the bodycam and dashcam footage appears on its YouTube page.
