INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Two parents have been arrested following their roles in the death of an infant boy who just turned one last week, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said Tuesday.
Angel Guadalupe Rosales Alvarado died sometime Monday after arriving at Eskenazi Hospital with his parents, 31-year-old Wendy Alvarado and 35-year-old Dunio Duarte-Rosales.
When officers arrived to investigation the infant’s death, they noted the boy was “severely malnourished and underweight.”
They spoke with Wendy Alvarado while at the hospital, learning that the boy’s father went back home to tend to two other kids who’d been left there unsupervised.
IMPD says a few hours later, Duarte-Rosales was taken into custody at his southwest side home. Police later obtained a search warrant for the house, finding “several items of interest, including multiple prescription narcotics.”
The two parents were booked into the Marion County jail and face charges of neglect of a dependent resulting in death. Wendy Alvarado also faces a charge of interfering in medical services.
They are reportedly being held under a federal hold, jail records show.
IMPD Chief Chris Bailey said in a statement the infant had just turned 1 years old a week before his death.
““Parents are meant to protect and care for their children. Tragically, that responsibility was not carried out here, and Baby Angel suffered the consequences,” he said. “Baby Angel had turned one just last week and should have experienced nothing but love and safety. Today, our entire city is grieving a child who deserved so much more. No one should ever endure this kind of pain.”
Court dates have not been set for Alvarado or Duarte-Rosales.
This is a developing story.
