INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — On Monday afternoon, Gov. Braun and Department of Homeland Security Executive Director Jonathan Whitham, provided an update regarding Indiana’s recovery efforts after historic flooding displaced “well over 1,000” residents and destroyed many roads and business across the state.
During the press conference, Braun thanked President Trump for his quick response to activating an emergency declaration and says the state is working with the president to declare a major disaster declaration, which Whitham says, is a “lengthy process.”
It could take seven to 10 days until the declaration is in place. Braun says after the state finishes accessing all damage, which the governor expects to take two more days, the state will submit the declaration. If granted, it would open up more resources to help Hoosiers recover.
Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority is activating temporary housing to get Hoosiers out of emergency shelters and into hotels and apartments. Hoosiers in need of temporary housing can find more information at IN211.communityos.org or by calling 211. Additionally, Hoosiers can find American Red Cross shelters in impacted areas here.
In addition to the IHCDA housing voucher, Indiana is activating a state disaster relief fund that will provide $5,000 to emergency aid grants to individuals to receive clothing and food while they are displaced. Hoosiers should call 211 for more information.
“We want displaced Hoosiers to have a hot meal, a comfortable bed, and access to air conditioning,” Braun said during the press conference. “So, in addition to the state providing temporary housing vouchers, I am activating the State Disaster Relief Fund to provide emergency funds to impacted Hoosiers.”
Gov. Braun activated emergency SNAP benefit replacements for eligible SNAP recipients who lost food due to the storm or power outages. Affected Hoosiers will need to submit an affidavit for replacement benefits. The affidavit must be submitted within 10 days of the event and the loss (due to power outage, flood, etc.) must be verified. The document may be uploaded to the FSSA Benefits Portal, faxed to 888-436-9199 or dropped off at any Division of Family Resources’ office.
“Hoosiers are resiliant,” Braun said during his press conference.
