WHITE COUNTY, Ind. — Two people are dead after a crash on Interstate 65 in White County Wednesday evening.
According to Indiana State Police, just before 4 p.m., officers responded to a double fatal crash on I-65 near the 194-mile marker, which is about six miles south of the Remington area.
Preliminary investigation indicates that a semi-tractor trailer was traveling northbound on I-65 in the left lane when, for reasons still under investigation, it left the roadway, entered the median, and crossed into the southbound lanes.
At that time, another semi-tractor trailer was traveling southbound in the left lane. The northbound semi struck the southbound semi, and both vehicles came to rest, blocking the southbound lanes, according to ISP.
Despite life-saving efforts, two people died at the scene. A third person was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Police did not confirm if the drivers of the semis were the ones who died.
ISP said a bystander stopped at the scene and provided critical information to first responders while assisting with life-saving efforts. “Their actions and willingness to help were appreciated during this difficult incident,” ISP said in a statement.
State police are asking drivers to seek an alternative route and say all lanes will be closed in both directions for “several hours.”
The crash remains under active investigation.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
