LEBANON, Ind. (WISH) — The Boone County Sheriff’s Office has provided updates in the fatal Interstate 65 crash that killed an Indiana National Guardsman.
News 8 first reported on the accident Friday.
The crash happened around 12:15 p.m. Friday at the 129-mile marker of I-65 south. Sheriff’s deputies and Whitestown police officers arrived at the scene to investigate a crash involving a military-grade Humvee, a Subaru, and a truck pulling a car hauler.
Spc. Terry Frye, 23, of Lafayette, was one of four Indiana National Guard members in the Humvee en route from Frankfort to Camp Atterbury for a drill weekend. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other Guard members were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. The sheriff’s office identified them as Izaya Phillips, 21, of Ingalls, Indiana, who was the driver of the Humvee; Luke Richardson, 23, of Carmel; Nicholas Reinhart, 27, of Washington, Indiana.
The two other drivers received treatment at the scene by medics.
The Subaru driver was identified as 51-year-old Veronica Webster of Independence, Kentucky. Investigators also identified the car hauler driver as Goderdzi Gujabidze, 56, of Brooklyn, New York.
Webster and Gujabidze were taken to a nearby hospitals for a blood draw, which is standard in Indiana when there is a crash resulting in fatalities or injuries.
Investigators did not provide any updates to the cause of the crash, but said it was still under review.
The sheriff’s office says during the initial investigation, U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement placed a hold on Gujabidze, who was then detained and being held at the Boone County jail.
It’s unclear why Gujabidze was placed on an ICE hold. News 8 has reached out to Immigration Customs and Enforcement for more information.
