WHITESTOWN, Ind. (WISH) — The Boone County Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges in the Whitestown shooting death of house cleaner Maria Rios Perez.
The announcement came almost two weeks after Perez’s death on Nov. 5.
Curt Andersen of Whitestown now faces one charge of voluntary manslaughter. Prosecutors say the decision came after determining Andersen’s actions did not fall in line with Indiana’s “Stand Your Ground” law.
Perez, a 32-year-old mother of four from Guatemala, was fatally shot just before 7 a.m. Nov. 5 after she and other members of a cleaning crew arrived at the wrong address.
Whitestown Police Department officers originally responded to a possible home invasion in progress near the intersection of Maize Lane and Red Barn Drive. There, they found Perez and a man on the home’s front porch.
Officers tended to Perez, only to discover she was dead.
Perez’s death sparked outrage in the community, many family members and friends rallying to both celebrate Perez’s life and demand justice in her death.
A common cry was heard at protests: “Sin justicia, no hay paz.” No justice, no peace.
This is a breaking story and will be updated with further information once available.
