INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A 52-year-old inmate died at the Marion County Adult Detention Center early Friday morning, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
Around 12:45 a.m. Friday, corrections staff responded to an unresponsive inmate, identified as 52-year-old Fredrick Bennett. Corrections staff and on-site medical staff immediately rendered aid and requested assistance from emergency medical services (EMS). EMS medics arrived and took over life-saving efforts before declaring Bennett dead at 1:19 a.m. Friday.
Bennett’s death is being independently investigated by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the Forensic Services Agency, and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Unit, which is standard procedure. Investigators believe pre-existing medical factors may have contributed to Bennett’s death. The Marion County Coroner’s Office will investigate to determine the cause of death.
Bennett had been held in the Marion County Jail system nine times since 2008. At the time of this most recent arrest on Jan. 9, 2025, Bennett had outstanding warrants for armed robbery, unlawful carrying of a handgun with a prior felony, and theft with a prior conviction.
Bennett was being held for trial pending the payment of a $100,000 surety bond.
