Indiana State Police confirm fatal police shooting in New Chicago

NEW CHICAGO, Ind. (WISH) — A shooting on Saturday involving two officers from a northwest Indiana town has been ruled a fatal police shooting, the Indiana State Police said in a news release issued Tuesday.

The release says the Lake County Coroner’s Office will announce information about the person who was killed as well as a dead person found by a 911 caller before the police shooting.

The shooting happened about 3:30 p.m. Saturday in a residential area in the 200 block of Huber Boulevard in the Lake County town of New Chicago. The town, which has nearly 2,000 residents, is about a mile southeast of the intersection of I-65 and I-94. Homes in the area have a Hobart ZIP code.

A 911 caller reported finding a dead person inside a home on Huber Boulevard. Officers arrived to find the co-owner of the home, who had made the call, was agitated, so officers called an ambulance for a psychological evaluation. Then, about 4:30 p.m. Saturday, shots were fired inside the home.

State police were asked to investigate the fatal shooting.

No officers were injured, and state police said inquiries regarding the identity and status of the officers involved should be directed to the New Chicago Police Department.

On its Facebook page, the New Chicago Police Chief Earl Mayo said in a Sunday post that the officers involved were put on paid administrative duty, a standard procedure after a police shooting. The department says it will release the names of the officers once state police have interviewed them.
