Pursuit ends in La Porte County with wanted suspect bitten by K-9

LA PORTE, Ind. (WISH) — A Michigan man wanted in Noble County is behind bars after leading police on a chase through La Porte County that ended with him being bitten by a K-9.

A La Porte County sheriff’s deputy was standing on a sidewalk near the intersection of Lincolnway and Monroe Street when he saw Jacob Cooper, 34, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, driving around 50 mph in a 25 mph zone. Cooper’s vehicle also sounded like it had a flat tire, the sheriff’s office added.

The deputy tried to pull Cooper over near 1st and J streets, but he didn’t stop. A pursuit followed, going through several city streets on La Porte’s west side.

Cooper lost control when he hit a curve, crashing into a fence outside the La Porte County Highway Department – but he kept going, even as deputies eventually deployed tire deflation devices at least twice.

The chase continued into Michigan City, finally stopping at B & E Marine. Deputies say Cooper still refused to cooperate, eventually fleeing on foot through the B & E Marine property.

K-9 Simba gave chase, catching up with Cooper and biting him in the center of the back.

Cooper was taken into custody on several felony and misdemeanor charges, including:

  • Resisting law enforcement with a vehicle
  • Resisting law enforcement
  • Leaving the scene
  • Two counts of operating while intoxicated

Court records show Cooper was also wanted in Noble County for charges of battery by bodily waste.
