ALBANY, Ind. (WISH) — The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office paused the search for a missing young adult at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Mississinewa River after rising water made conditions too dangerous.
The search started Wednesday evening after reports of four people in the flooded river near County Road 450 East and Gregory Road, halfway between the towns of Albany and Eaton.
Rescue teams saved two people by 9:02 p.m. Wednesday, and found a third person safe shortly after. Teams used boats, drones, and foot patrols through the night to find the fourth person. The name of the person being sought has not been publicly shared.
Work stopped around 12:30 a.m. Thursday, but started again at 8 a.m. Thursday. Riverbank patrols and and an Indiana State Police helicopter were added to the search teams.
Officials said swift currents, high water, and debris made boat searches unsafe. They said the safety of first responders and volunteers is the top priority.
The search will start again when the river falls, and it is safe to continue. However, more rain in the forecast could delay those plans.
