What the Colts plan to do at QB for Thursday’s preseason game

WESTFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — The Indianapolis Colts are gearing up for their first preseason game of the year.

The Colts play the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night in their preseason opener. In fact, the Colts not only have a preseason game against the Ravens, but they will also take part in a joint practice with the Ravens on Tuesday in Baltimore.

Of course, one of the big questions yet to be answered is what the Colts plan to do with playing time in the preseason games when it comes to quarterbacks Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones.

The two quarterbacks are competing for the starting job this season.

Following the Colts’ practice on Sunday at training camp, head coach Shane Steichen shared some insight into the plan for Thursday’s contest against the Ravens.

“Both are going to play in this game,” Steichen said. “I haven’t had a chance to talk to them about who’s starting, but I’ll address that with them tonight (Sunday night). I want them to hear it from me first before they hear through the media. But yeah, we’ll work through that.”

The Colts have three preseason games this year:

  • Thursday, Aug. 7 at Ravens
  • Saturday, Aug. 16 vs. Packers
  • Saturday, Aug. 23 at Bengals

“I mean, one will play a good amount this game (at Ravens), and the next one will probably play a good amount the next game (vs. Packers),” Steichen said.

Steichen reiterated that everything is being evaluated when it comes to determining which quarterback will ultimately earn the starting role.

“I think it’s all encompassing,” Steichen said. “Obviously, the competition will probably pick up going against a different opponent on Tuesday against Baltimore, and then obviously the preseason games. I think it’s just human nature that it’ll picks up a little bit. But these practices are huge too out here.”
