UPS ‘saddened’ after employee fatally shot outside logistics facility

Man dead after shooting outside UPS facility

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Logistics provider UPS on Wednesday shared a statement with News 8 after one of its workers was fatally shot Tuesday night outside its facility on West 81st Street.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our employee. We defer to authorities for any additional information as there is an ongoing investigation.”

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says, after being shot, the worker went to a nearby parking lot. That’s where medics and officers found him in a car with gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

As News 8 earlier reported, IMPD was called to reports of shots fired and a person shot at 9:55 p.m. Tuesday at the UPS facility in the 5400 block of West 81st Street. It’s about three-quarters of a mile southeast of the I-465 interchange for West 86th Street.

IMPD Capt. Rob Rider said Tuesday night, “Right now, we don’t have any leads. Detectives have some information they’re working to develop a suspect. I can’t say there isn’t really known threat to the public,” said .

The atmosphere outside of the facility on Wednesday was quiet and somber. News 8 stood outside of the facility to talk with employees on their way in and out of the building. Off-camera, they said were completely shocked that something like this could’ve happened there. They also were saddened to hear about their fellow colleague’s death.

Some other employees said off-camera that they were scared for their safety or fear it could happen again.

None of them would talk on camera, as they were not working on the shift when the shooting happened. They said, however, the shooting was all anyone is talking about inside, and they’re hoping every employee stays safe moving forward.

Anyone with information was asked to contact Det. Connie Person with the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or email the detective at connie.pearson@indy.gov.

This story was updated to correct the spelling of the IMPD captain’s name.
