INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Two men already serving time in prison for unrelated incidents have been charged with murder in an unsolved homicide investigation, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department announced Tuesday.
Rodney Mitchell III was found shot and killed in the 700 block of West Southern Avenue on Dec. 9, 2019.
IMPD Homicide detectives were called to the scene to assist, but the case was eventually handed off to the Unsolved Homicides Unit in July 2024.
After further investigation, detectives identified two suspects: Jonathan Hayes, 28, and Alexander Russell, 25.
The Marion County Superior Court issued warrants for their arrests, but both men were already incarcerated for unrelated crimes. Russell is serving a 20-year sentence for an attempted murder, while Hayes is serving time for a robbery and attempted robbery.
Russell and Hayes were both preliminarily charged with two counts of murder and one count of robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. The Marion County prosecutor would make final charging decisions.
