FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WISH) — A passenger in an SUV died in a crash with a tanker truck and a pickup truck Thursday morning on I-69 in Fort Wayne, the city’s police department said in a news release.
The crash of the tanker, a Ford F150 truck and the Ford Expedition SUV happened just after 7:10 a.m. Thursday in the southbound lanes between the U.S. 24 West /Jefferson Boulevard and State Road 14 West/Illinois Road interchanges.
Six other people from the SUV were injured in the crash and taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries not believed to be life-threatening, said Sgt. Jonathan Cutler of Fort Wayne Police Department in a livestreamed, impromptu news conference near the crash scene.
He said the SUV was “sandwiched” between the tanker and the pickup truck.
Witnesses told investigators that traffic was backed up due to a “wide load” vehicle further down the road, which may have contributed to the crash.
Also, police say, lane restrictions due to construction may have also played a role in the traffic congestion leading to the crash. Indiana Department of Transportation has a project underway to improve the State Road 14 West/Illinois Road interchange.
The Fort Wayne Police Department’s Fatal Accident Crash Team is the primary investigation unit. The southbound lanes of I-69 were closed for the crash, reopening sometime before 11:15 a.m. Friday.
The Allen County coroner will release the name of the deceased once next of kin have been notified, the release said.
