Suspect in near north side police shooting in custody; 1 other suspect at large

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — One suspect in Thursday’s police shooting on Indy’s near north side has been taken into custody, while one other remains at large, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Officers arrested Mickel Thacker, 32, on preliminary charges of robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, strangulation, domestic battery, and unlawful entry of a motor vehicle.

He has not been charged with anything relating to Thursday’s police shooting.

The initial domestic disturbance happened in the 7700 block of Knue Road around 9 p.m. Wednesday, where the victim reported to police they had been assaulted by Thacker.

Thacker was armed with a gun at the time of the assault. He fled the scene before police arrived.

Around midnight Thursday, IMPD tracked Thacker and at least one other suspect to the area of East 30th and Ruckle streets.

After a short pursuit, Thacker and another person jumped out of the car in the 400 block of West 28th Street. The police shooting followed soon after.

After the suspects fled the scene, IMPD tracked one of them to a home near the shooting scene. The suspect refused repeated commands to leave the house, leading to a standoff with SWAT officers.

The standoff ended when one person was wheeled away from the house on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance.

Thacker was booked into the Marion County jail on Thursday and was being held without bond. At least one other suspect is at large.
