Tracking how tariffs could impact prices
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Buy now or pay more later? That’s the decision many families could face as new tariffs take effect.
The impact could be felt everywhere, from gadgets to groceries. A BudgetLab report from Yale University published in June estimates tariffs could cost the average family about $2,000 this year.
Consumer Reports says there are ways to shop smart and stretch your dollar even in this topsy-turvy market.
“Don’t wait to buy items you already planned to purchase. If you need a laptop and got the money for it and the price has held steady, it makes a lot of sense to buy it now,” Chris Raymond, with Consumer Reports, said.
Experts say shoppers can save by looking for older models of popular electronics. TVs, laptops, and smartphones that are a year or two old often remain on shelves after newer models arrive. Another option: certified refurbished products. Apple, Samsung, and other companies resell factory-refreshed devices that often come with warranties and carry a lower price tag.
Switching to a less expensive brand or model could also help balance the budget.
“If prices rise. Maybe an item with fewer bells and whistles suits your needs just fine. For example, Samsung sells a number of well-made Galaxy phones beyond its flagship line. They’re much less expensive and according to CR tests … still do virtually everything you want a modern smartphone to do,” Raymond said.
Finally, Consumer Reports recommends choosing reliable products built to last, especially since higher prices could stick around. Members can use CR’s ratings to see which brands are the most, and least, dependable in several categories.
The organization also recently launched a price tracker that monitors 16 popular products. It shows weekly price changes to help families decide the best time to buy.
