INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Jane Rose, the founder and executive director of the Indy Great Pyrenees Rescue, has a big personality with equally big doggies to rescue.
Rose joined Midday for a recent episode of “Pet Pals TV” with Patty Spitler and Gina Glaros, bringing along Great Pyr pups Harrison and Junebug to share the rescue’s story during its 25th anniversary.
Rose said it all started when she adopted a Great Pyrenees in 2000, and things took off from there. Now, they help roughly 75 to 100 dogs each year.
With years of Great Pyrenees experience under her metaphorical paws, Rose says this is what you should know about the breed before adopting one.
“They’re wonderful dogs, but they’re not for everybody,” Rose said. “They bark, they can be protective – they are guardian dogs.”
And of course, they shed. A lot.
“Just get rid of your black pants,” Patty later commented.
Rose also introduced the dogs of the hour: Harrison and Junebug.
Junebug was found sometime early summer completely bald. “She had absolutely no hair, a terrible skin condition, an ear infection – she also has heartworm,” Rose said. “We’re just waiting on her to gain a little more weight before treating her for that.”
While Junebug is currently staying with a foster family, year-and-a-half old Harrison is up for adoption or foster.
“He came from a hoarding situation where somebody had a lot of animals, and the local shelter had to step in and take over,” Rose added.
Gina also took a moment to show off her dog, Daisy, an “all-American dog” who is part Pyrenees, part Australian shepherd, and all cuteness.
Rose ended her time on “Pet Pals TV” by saying the shelter’s “busy season” never ends.
“I think people are just irresponsible,” Rose said. “They just don’t do their research, they don’t spay and neuter their dogs.”
