Ohio man arrested after pursuit of stolen vehicle ends in crash, foot chase

NEW CASTLE, Ind. (WISH) — Indiana State Police troopers on Tuesday arrested an Ohio man after a stolen vehicle pursuit ended in a crash and a foot chase, according to the agency in a Thursday news release.

At 6 p.m. Tuesday, ISP troopers initiated a pursuit of a suspected stolen vehicle that was reported to be traveling westbound on I-70 from the Indiana/Ohio state line.

A black Chevrolet Suburban matching the vehicle description was observed by a trooper near the 131.5-mile marker of Interstate 70. When the trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver accelerated in an attempt to flee.

The suspect vehicle exited the interstate at the 115-mile marker and proceeded northbound on State Road 109. As the suspect approached the intersection of State Road 109 and State Road 234, the Suburban sideswiped a truck while turning west onto State Road 234. The vehicle then turned south on County Road 500 East in Hancock County, continued west on County Road 600 North, and eventually headed south on State Road 9.

In an effort to safely end the pursuit, an ISP trooper deployed a tire deflation device on State Road 9. However, the suspect was able to avoid them and continued southbound.

The pursuit came to an end when the driver exited the moving vehicle, which then continued until it crashed into a tree. The suspect fled on foot into a nearby cornfield. Troopers established a perimeter, and with the assistance of a K-9 unit, the suspect was detained without further incident.

The suspect was identified as Sharod Leon Kenzo Hicks, 23, of Dayton, Ohio. Hicks suffered injuries from jumping out of the moving vehicle and was transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he was treated and released.

Hicks was arrested and preliminarily charged with resisting law enforcement, vehicle theft, aggressive driving, reckless operation of a vehicle in a highway worksite, criminal recklessness, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, and three active arrest warrants out of Ohio.
