SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WISH) — The University of Notre Dame’s iconic mascot has a new look in a recently unveiled logo.
The school posted the image on social media with several unveiling videos on X. At first glance, it may look exactly like the old logo. However, there are some big differences.
The logo has the Fighting Irish mascot has the same face drawn into a scowl, leaning into a confrontation. The difference? He’s traded his raised fists for a football.
The university titled the image simply as “Notre Dame Football Leprechaun.”
This is the first of many sports-specific logos the school says it plans to roll out soon.
For the last 60 years, the leprechaun has been squared up to represent the Fighting Irish. The pugnacious version debuted on the cover of Time magazine in 1964. That version also appeared to show the leprechaun smoking a pipe.
“The Leprechaun represents the tenacious and determined spirit of the Fighting Irish, a relentless desire to seize every opportunity with unity, clarity and purpose what though the odds be great or small. This logo, drawn from a legacy known around the world, represents Fighting Irish Football,” the school said.
The school, in its post on X, recognized artist David Nott’s help in crafting the football-specific logo.
A few other changes will be coming to Notre Dame football this season, too. In April, the school announced another sports change. The university is expanding alcohol sales at basketball, football and hockey games, starting with the 2025 football season.
Alcohol was already available for some premium seats, but it will now be accessible for all premium and general admission seating.
Fighting Irish fans will see concession stands selling alcohol at Notre Dame Stadium, Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center, and Compton Family Ice Arena and will perhaps be greeted with the new logo in the process.
