MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) — Muncie officials, in collaboration with Indiana American Water, on Wednesday announced a series of changes to the rules and operations at Prairie Creek Reservoir Park.
According to a news release, these changes are being implemented to ensure long-term water quality and environmental sustainability of the park, which serves as source of drinking water for the community.
Several decades ago, Muncie expanded the use of certain areas of Prairie Creek Reservoir Park, specifically, its campground and trail systems, beyond the provisions outlined in the original lease agreement. No new changes have been made since 2020, however, Indiana American Water is now requiring updates, and with their collaboration, Muncie officials are working to rectify their concerns.
At a Tuesday meeting, the Muncie Parks and Recreation Board approved the following operational changes:
- 1. Horse and ATV trail closures (effective August 1, 2025): The west section of the lake, including Indian Hill, equestrian trails, and ATV trails, will be closed to the public.
- 2. Horses (effective August 1, 2025): Horses and horse trailers are no longer permitted in the park.
- 3. Transfer policy changes: Transfers of campsites and dock spaces will no longer be allowed.
- 4. Lottery suspension: The lottery system for the 2026 season will be suspended until further notice.
According to a news release, these rule changes at Prairie Creek regarding dock transfer and the lottery system are intended to help preserve the reservoir’s long-term health and sustainability. These updates are designed to limit any increase in the number of docks, thereby helping to control overall dock usage and reduce potential impacts on water quality. By proactively managing growth, Muncie officials are aiming to protect this vital water resource for current and future users.
